Quick DIY Tips to Check Your Old Pole Barn

If you have an older pole barn, you might be wondering how it’s holding up. Here are three quick and easy things you can check to make sure it’s still in good shape.

1. Check Your Old Pole Barn for Rotting Posts

Rotting posts are one of the most common issues. Here's how to check:

  • Dig down about six inches at the base of a post.

  • Inspect the wood. In the first six to eight inches, you'll be able to tell if there’s rot.

A little effort here can save you from bigger problems later.

2. Inspect Roof Fasteners

Are your roof screws or nails coming loose?

  • Stand on the ground and look up the roof at an angle.

  • Can’t see clearly? Use your phone’s zoom to snap a few pictures.

Loose fasteners can lead to leaks, so this is worth keeping an eye on.

3. Look for Leaning

Is your barn leaning? Here’s what to do:

  • Use a level on the posts to measure the angle.

  • Track it over time to see if the lean is getting worse.

Bonus Tip: Check for Water Marks

Take a look inside your barn. If you see water marks on the roof strapping, it could mean there’s a leak to address.

If you find any of these issues and need advice or repairs, feel free to reach out. We’re always here to help keep your buildings in great shape!
