What Are Post Frame Building Posts Made Of?

When it comes to constructing post frame buildings, one of the most common questions we hear is: What are the posts made of? These posts play a critical role in the strength and durability of the structure, so let’s break it down.

What Are the Most Common Post Types in Post Frame Buildings?

For most post-frame buildings, the posts are typically constructed using:

  • 4-ply or 5-ply 2x8s (most common)

  • 3-ply posts (used in smaller buildings)

  • 2x10 posts (used in taller buildings)

What Does "4-Ply" or "5-Ply" Mean?

When we say "4-ply" or "5-ply," we mean taking four or five pieces of lumber (e.g., 2x8s, 2x10s, or sometimes 2x6s) and attaching them together. This process ensures the post meets the building’s engineered design specifications.

Here’s how these posts are typically put together:

  • Fastened with nails or GRK screws

  • Sometimes glued, depending on the engineer’s requirements

  • Built for strength and stability

Why Use Multi-Ply Posts Instead of Solid Posts?

We use multi-ply posts instead of solid, milled posts like 6x6, 6x8, or 8x8 for a few key reasons:

1. Resistance to Twisting and Cracking

Solid posts are more prone to twisting and cracking over time, especially when exposed to environmental changes. Multi-ply posts, on the other hand, are more stable and hold their shape better.

2. Better Structural Integrity

Solid posts can have weak points, like knots, which significantly reduce their strength. With multi-ply posts, even if one ply has a knot, the remaining plies provide reinforcement. This ensures that the post remains strong and reliable.

What About Pressure-Treated Lumber?

If the walls of your post frame building are exposed to the elements (e.g., if the sides aren’t enclosed), the posts will be made from pressure-treated lumber. This ensures the posts can withstand moisture and weather conditions, maintaining the building’s integrity over time.
